SL-island :: exercise 0

SL-island :: Exercise 0
Alright! This exercise was fun and we managed to complete most of it. We got to know Second Life abit better, and I'll recount our day later in this entry. Most of the snapshots are editted to either minimise the number of picture uploads we have and/or identify ourselves in the game.
Here's what we have:

Meeting up with team mates:
Olive's upside down room:
Looking weird...

Ok, we had a scare with this one. We were just hanging around the place, when one unknown guy suddenly said "I've been waiting for you" and then he starts jumping from the roof (standing up when you're seated at on the ceiling brings you to the room) and starts chasing us with a gun. We didn't know (and still don't) what would happen if we're shot, so we just run. But it was funny still. Was that some sort of gimmick? Cos it really works. I'm going over to see if that guy's still there, with my trusty saber (given to me by this nice guy 'Bones') in tow...

Balloon ride:

Nice view of the SL sea!

Initially we went to the wrong place. But it had a nice view so we hang around for awhile, taking in the architecture and stuff, but suddenly, this guy did something and the popcorn machine jus rolled off the cliff along with him! Real funny, wished we knew how to do that...

Dragon Pet @ NCP:

Little Dragons. "They talk! They Fly! They move their wings!"

It was kinda weird going there, because some guy always zapped us to the main entrance.

Mohawk:

Cool hairdo... for the dudes...

Really didn't wanna do this, cos I didn't save my hairstyle. The guys look cool in mohawk. As for me... let's just say I'm pretty happy to receive free hairstyles afterwards... =)

Teleportation trail 1:

Just monkeying around...

Teleportation trail 2:

We're getting good at this! See those flowers? The tiny red and blue ones...

Teleportation trail 3:

Guess where we built our house? On top of Moth Temple!!!

We removed it afterwards...
I'm gonna continue the rest of the trails if I have time. I want that L$1000!

SLingo!

Having fun!

We met a nice guy who let us played for free and let us win L$95. He even offered to run over that scary guy at Olive's for us... but we didn't know the latter's name... The game was fun, something like Bingo but trickier. Gabriel won in the end... but doesn't realise that until that nice guy told him.

SL Fever!

It's boogey time!

We're never gonna do this is Real Life, so we figured we could party away all day here without anyone knowing who we are!

Meeting a Greeter:

Lots of helpful people in SL

We couldn't find a greeter, so we did the next best thing: find a SL mentor. So we found one and she gave us lots of guides, and even shields against guns. Pretty neat stuff. Here's a helpful tip from 'Second Life Guide Book.':
"Whenever you start your travels in a new land, it's always handy to have a Guidebook to help you quickly find some fun places"

Conclusion
Melissa
SL is a very diverse engine in a sense that it could be used for building a game, or viewing movies, showcasing one's talents in various areas, or testing out an event. To build a game in SL would be very interesting as it would be played by people from various parts of the world. Technology-wise, SL is pretty flexible, allowing us to customise almost everything we want, and providing us with the means to do it.

I find that second life is more of a place for people to socialise with one another rather than on gaming. It can be entertaining if the user knows what they want to do inside, else it might turn out boring to them.
Pro: It's like a virtual version of the real world and in addition it allows people to experience things they can't normally do in real life, eg. flying around. It is flexible and allows you to do anything you want inside.
Con: There are all sort of people in there so there are offensive stuff inside as well.It can turn out boring if the user does not have any objective inside. The lag present can be annoying to people as well.

Second Life has a lot of potential to be a suitable entertainment platform. Despite the rather steep requirements for a massively multiplayer online 'game' like this (High-speed broadband of perhaps 1.5Mbps or higher), it has pretty good graphics and an amazing scripting engine which allows limitless possibilities within the world. Second Life already has a massive amount of activities which allows you to take casual tours to playing games or perhaps even visiting real world companies. Despite all this potential Second Life can offer, it has it's downsides like malicious and sexual content which may turn away conservative players. Also, the lag presented can be quite a hindrance especially so in populated areas. However, if carefully planned and having taken full advantage of all this potential, Second Life can be a very good entertainment platform.

P.S: Sorry for the long entry, but SL is so exciting, I don't wanna leave out the fun bits
